Our Story and Founders

Our Story

Though The Carnegie Principle Subscription was launched in July 2016, it’s origins began in 1979 when two of the founders, living separate lives thousands of miles apart, each experienced an inflection in their life path which eventually led to the creation of The Carnegie Principle Subscription.

Nineteen years old, married and with two children, Don Boyer held a low-paying job as a custodian.  One evening, as he was tidying the offices of a successful enterprise, he stepped into the office of the entrepreneur who created the businesses to empty the wastebasket.   As he entered the well-appointed office, he was surprised to see the entrepreneur sitting behind his desk still working.  He pardoned himself for the interruption, then hesitantly asked the entrepreneur if he could ask him a question.

“What is it that has made you so successful?”

The entrepreneur stood up and stepped around the large desk.  He invited Don to sit down in the leather chair in front of the desk and a dialogue began that changed Don’s life.

The entrepreneur offered to “mentor” Don; to teach Don how to create financial freedom for himself and for his family.  The entrepreneur became Don’s “Millionaire Mentor” providing him knowledge Don then applied to become a successful millionaire himself.

The very same year, 1979, Tom Ward was a young manager recently transferred to Cincinnati with Procter & Gamble.  Tom had been transferred to P&G’s Ivorydale Food Plant from the Jackson, Tennessee Plant that made Pringle’s New Fangled Potato Chips.  Though the culture of Procter & Gamble was similar at the two locations, the climates of the two manufacturing facilities were as different as night and day.  Jackson had been an environment of “expanding human potential.”  Ivorydale, the oldest of the P&G facilities, was a habitat of “boundaries and conformance to rules.”

Upon arriving at Ivorydale, on Tom’s first assignment, he went about the task as he would have in Jackson.  He engaged and involved everyone impacted by the upcoming evaluation.  He provided open communications and information.  In the habitat of “boundaries and rules,” another manager pointed out to Tom, “You never are supposed to do that here.”  An initial wave of emotion came over Tom; part fear, part confusion, and later, part disappointment.  As he drove up the long hill from the plant heading home, he made a decision.  He decided, as a manager, he would be an “agent of change,” not a “keeper of the status quo.”  Over the next four years, he used his experience at the Jackson Plant to “expand human potential” in Ivorydale.  When he left the Ivorydale facility, the “seeds of human potential” had been planted and the weeds of “compliance and conformance” were beginning to die.

Other key events occurred to each of the founders.

In 1986, Tom was introduced to Ed Foreman and Earlene Vining.  They taught him “Successful Life” lessons that were based on character and principles, including the principles shared with Napoleon Hill by Andrew Carnegie.

In 1998, Don was invited to join an exclusive network of successful entrepreneurs.  He was taught about personal energy and studied Charles F. Haanel’s Master Key System—interestly a system that Napoleon Hill had also studied as he compiled the knowledge that became his classic books: The Laws of Success and Think and Grow Rich.

In 2008, Don created a study program combining his own experience and the specialized knowledge from Hannel’s Master Key System.  As the final touches of audios and manuscripts were completed, Don put them in his vault.  For some reason, the time wasn’t quite right.  Patiently, he began waiting for the right time and the right way to share them with the world.

In 2013, after Tom had “kicked off his corporate boots and hung up his ‘big business’ hat” two years prior, he sat down one night to rediscover 'his why', to uncover his path of purpose.  He began writing down all the experiences he could remember in his life.  Starting from his childhood and continuing all the way to that particular night, he began journaling the “one liners” of his life.  After an hour or so, there were two lines that leaped off the page singing to his heart.  The outcome of combining those two “one liners,” those two experiences, those two passions for Tom became his first book, The Power of Living By Design.

Then came the year Don and Tom’s paths crossed: 2015.  Each of them were members of a common organization.  Don held a prominent position in the institution; Tom aspired to share the message from his book from its platform.  Tom attended Don’s Public Speaker Certification Course.  The course “spoke to him.”  He invited Don to breakfast one morning during the seminar and a spark was struck between the two of them.

Early in 2016, the spark grew into a flame—a flame of friendship and trust and a flame of passion and mission: the mission to teach individuals to “Live By Design” energetically.

And so The Carnegie Principle Subscription was created and launched and the rest will become history!
